About Senate Districts

The Texas Senate is the upper house of the Texas State Legislature. There are 31 single-member Senatorial (Senate) districts across the State of Texas, with populations of approximately 806,000 per district, based on the 2010 U.S. Census.

Over the last fifteen years, Collin County has been the fastest growing modern suburban county in the U.S., becoming the sixth most populous county in Texas, with a population now approaching one million residents. Two state Senate Districts are mapped into Collin County, given its current population density.

Senate District 8 occupies 154 precincts in the southwestern portion of Collin County, and it also extends into northern precincts of Dallas County. Senate District 30 occupies 55 precincts in the northern and eastern portions of Collin County, plus whole and partial areas of 17 other counties.  (In What Senate District Do I Reside)

Governance of the Texas' major political parties is largely organized by these Senate Districts. Our State Democratic Executive Committee -- also know as the SDEC - carries on the activities of the party in communities across Texas. The SDEC is composed of leaders from Texas’ 31 senate districts and representatives of our people - Asian Americans, African Americans, County Chairs, Democrats with Disabilities, Hispanic Caucus, Rural Texans, LGBT Texans, Women, Texas Environmental Democrats and young Democrats.

The convention system of Texas' major political parties is also organized by Texas' 31 Senate Districts. Democrats in each of these 31 Senate Districts will select delegates to represent them at the State Democratic Convention. Delegates of each of the 31 Senate Districts meet and caucus at State Democratic Convention to elect members to serve on the various State Convention Committees.

For counties like Collin County, which have more than one Senatorial District within their borders, Texas election statutes and TDP rules provide that each Senatorial District shall convene a SD Convention within each district's territory. Rural counties that are wholly contained in a single Senatorial District are assigned by Texas statutes and party rules to convene a County Convention.

This year Senate District 8 is allocated a total of 193 state convention delegates - 153 from the Collin County portion of SD8, and 40 from the Dallas portion. Senate District 8 will have two conventions on March 22nd - one SD8 Convention in Collin County and one SD8 Convention in Dallas County - to select their respective allocation of Delegates.

Senate District 30 will have 18 conventions on March 22nd - one within SD30 territory of Collin County, plus one in each county that is wholly or partially included in SD30 across north central Texas. Senate District 30 is allocated a total of 170 state convention delegates - 20 from the Collin County portion of SD30, and 150 apportioned from each of the 17 parts of SD30.
